THE MASTER OF DEMISE

Tell us about how you began your journey as an author - Did you always want to be an author?

I began crafting poems and short stories at the age of six. During my college years, I studied literature and creative writing without ever envisioning myself as an author.

The idea felt like a distant dream, almost unattainable. Having experienced a part of my childhood in the tumult of war in Bosnia, I felt an urgent need to share my stories. When I moved to the USA, after the war, this led me to embark on the ambitious journey of writing a memoir – a project that unfolded over nearly two decades.

The positive reception of my memoir fuelled a newfound passion for writing. There’s an abundance of untold stories within me, waiting to be expressed, and the encouragement from readers motivates me to continue this literary exploration.

What authors or books do you think influenced you the most on your journey?

This is akin to asking a chef about their favorite dish to prepare. Just as a chef uses various ingredients to craft a unique culinary experience, books and authors serve as diverse literary elements that have significantly influenced my journey. Each book I’ve read, and every author I’ve encountered, has contributed distinct flavors to the narrative of my own story, shaping my perspectives and fuelling my passion for literature.

What's the biggest hurdle you've had to overcome?

The greatest obstacle often comes in the form of that persistent, nagging voice whispering doubts about my capabilities. Beyond the internal struggles, time emerges as the most precious currency in a writing career.

If only there were more hours in the day to dedicate to both writing and the essential task of marketing my books!

If you could give some advice to a new writer in the indie community, what would it be?

Persist in your writing journey and remain authentic to yourself. As I’ve heard countless times, this is a marathon, not a sprint. Take your time, find your pace, and above all, enjoy the process! Oh yeah – and definitely hire a professional editor and book cover designer!
